There is no single type of person that is affected by drug abuse or addiction. People from all types of different demographic areas, education levels, and family backgrounds, can experience abuse and/or addiction issues.

Regardless of a person’s reason for taking drugs, it does not necessarily take very long for addiction to set in. Being able to recognize the signs of drug abuse and/or addiction can help if you are worried about a family member or friend and want to ensure that they have access to the right kind of help and support.

There are a number of different signs of drug abuse and/or addiction. Below are a few of the most recognizable symptoms that affect the body and behaviour.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

  • Sudden and extreme changes in weight
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Dilated pupils
  • Bruised and/or inflamed area around major veins

BEHAVIOURAL SYMPTOMS

  • Sudden changes in habits
  • Aggressive attitude
  • Easily irritated
  • Often extremely tired or without energy
  • Feelings of depression
  • Negative changes in finances
  • Sudden changes in social circle

Although this is not a comprehensive list, it is a starting point and some of the most commonly recognized signs of drug abuse and/or addiction.
